Understanding the Reasons for Overeating

There are many factors that contribute to weight gain. One of the most common however is overeating. For many people, overeating is simply normalized, such as having an extra helping at a meal when they're already full. For others, overeating can be a result of dieting, stress, or unhealthy food addictions. Regardless of the cause, there are several ways to control unhealthy eating habits that lead to weight gain.

One of the first steps to stop overeating is understanding why you do it. There are many reasons for overeating, and each person's situation is unique.

Unfortunately, many people with good intentions end up overeating when they begin a diet. Many diets are very restrictive and when caloric intake drops significantly, the body often goes into "survival mode" and stores fat in anticipation of future food shortages. This can cause weight gain instead of weight loss, as well as other health problems.

Binge eating is another common reason for overeating. According to the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA), it's estimated that approximately 2.8 million Americans have some type of binge eating disorder. Binge eating can be brought on by many different factors, such as stress or anxiety, lack of sleep, and hormone imbalances. When people binge eat, they often consume large quantities of food in a short period of time, often leading to weight gain.

Overeating is a common problem that can have serious consequences for your health. While there are many reasons for overeating, there are also several things that you can do to help normalize your eating habits. Overeating can be overcome with a bit of effort and some changes to your current routine.
